NOTES

  1. Original Douglas Mylrea clan (I am increasingly convinced that Jane's father, John Mcylroy, was a descendant of one of the early Mylrea men, recorded in Douglas in the early 1600 [John, Thomas, Henry) although no records exist to link him back to those early residents
  2. Jane was the younger daughter of Catharine Moore and John Mc ylroy, and the younger sister of Margaret (Joyner)
  3. Her mother Catharine (Moore) died in about 1698, and her father John Mc ylroy left the island, was never heard of again, and presumed dead
  4. Her mother's estate was dealt with in a Consistory Court in 1741, long after Margaret's mother is said to have died (1698), and long after the deaths of her daughters Margaret (Joyner) & Jane (Killey) in 1729 & 1736 respectively. The purpose of the hearing was not stated but the administration of the estate was handed to the widowers of Margaret & Jane
  5. Jane married Richard Killey in 1689 in Braddan, so presumably she was born in the 1660s. Richard Killey was a weaver
  6. They had children Charles (b1693), John (1701), Richard (1699), Katherine (m John Cottiman 1724), & Esther (m Peter Moore, Richard Joyner) 1704
  7. In 1730 Douglas: Richard (widowed) living with onr child . The family lived in James St
  8. Jane's legacy from her parents was Conchan (Douglas) cottage allotment #104 (later recorded #109), described in Lib Assed "three houses and two gardens 12d. Her husband Richard had purchased two tenancies in 1686 and 1692, and these were amalgamated into #104, described as a house and garden on the sand side 2d and a little house ¾d respectively. The allotments were on (now) Barrack St
  9. Their neighbours were Phil Higgin and his wife Jane Mcylrea, and Robert Lewn, father of Margaret who married Thomas Mylrea in 1717. The Lewns, Higgins & Mylreas all lived in Barrack St)
  10. Jane's sons John and Charles both died before their father Richard died in 1744, leaving only her son Richard jnr and two daughters Catherine (Cottiman) and Esther (Moore, Joyner)
  11. Richard snr was described in the parish burial register: "old Richard Killey aged about 90": 30th May 1744 Braddan so Richard was born 1655-1660
  12. Son Charles had five children Richard (1731-1740), Thomas (1732-1732), Charles jnr (1733), Jane (1735-1736) by wife Dorothy Gawn m1730 & d1735, and Elizabeth (1740) by second wife Margaret Maddrel m1739
  13. He was a prosperous Douglas merchant, involved in the Manx import/export trade. He amassed a considerable land holding in the surrounding area, and in Douglas itself
  14. Charles had a poignant burial entry: Mr Charles Killey & Peter Moore merchants with many passengers perished at sea. Peter Moore was Charles's brother in law. Both were buried January 25th 1740 in Braddan.
  15. Daughter Catherine (Cottier) had three children - Jane (1725), John (1725), a son (1731)
  16. Daughter Esther had seven children Robert (1732), Richard (1735), Esther (1739), Peter jnr (1741), & Isabel (1737) with Peter Moore; after his death, Esther married Richard Joiner in 1742 and had children Margaret (1743) & Catherine (1745)
  17. What remained of the allotment #104/9 passed to their daughter Esther, and then to grandson Richard Moore in 1762. It was probably the original Mcylroy holding
  18. A Jane Killey in Braddan was on 20th April 1724, which is a year earlier than the date nominated in her will. However, there is no burial recorded in Braddan for Jane Killey on the date specified in the document above
  19. NOTE: Be aware that cottage allotment numbers changed over time as Douglas expanded. Rent and neighbours become key elements in confirming whether the tenants (ie Charles Killey) have changed properties or whether they have remained stable while the allotment number from one LA to the next
